Inspired by the antics of Eddie Izzard’s 27 marathons in 27 days? Why not take to the trails yourself and sign up for one of the county’s excellent running events. Claire Pitcher gives you a head start with her top routes

New Forest Marathon - Sunday 11 September

• Distance: Full or half marathon, 10K, 5K and junior 1.5K

• Surface: Multi terrain

• Awards: Medal and a goody bag.

• Information: It’s the event that is famous for being ‘more than just a marathon’. Its aim is to inspire people of all ages and abilities to come to the New Forest National Park and enjoy the day, which last year saw every age from five to 92 years taking part. Organisers plan to make it a great place to enjoy a day out for those coming to support with a music stage hosting two bands throughout the day, local food and drink outlets, traders and children’s activities to enjoy.

Destination Basingstoke Half Marathon - Sunday 2 October

• Distance: 13.1 miles

• Surface: Road

• Awards: Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for men and women in all age categories.

• Information: It’s a challenging course, taking runners up hills near Cliddesden and Fairleigh Wallop through countryside and quaint villages. There are downhills too and a great view of Basingstoke.

• Entry: Unaffiliated entry costs £30 (over 17s only)

Eastleigh Park Run - Every Saturday at 9am

• Distance: 5K

• Surface: Grass

• Awards: No awards, just the satisfaction of beating your PB and being part of a friendly group.

• Information: The course is run at Fleming Park Old Golf Course in Eastleigh. It’s mostly grass, but it can get muddy if it’s been raining. The run uses shared paths so you do need to give way to other park users.

• Entry: Free

Gosport Half Marathon - Sunday 20 November

• Distance: 13.1 miles

• Surface: Cycle-paths, pavement and esplanade

• Awards: All finishers receive a medal and goodie bag.

• Information: The new course for this half marathon was introduced in 2014 and there may be a few adjustments this year, taking in the seafront at Lee-on-Solent. The start line is at Bay House School and race entries tend to be split evenly between club and non-club runners so there’s a good mix of abilities to ensure the race feels busy but not crowded.

• Entry: Affiliated £16, non-affiliated £18. No entries on the day.

Meon Valley Express - Sunday 18 September

• Distance: Half marathon and marathon

• Surface: Disused rail line

• Information: Starting in Wickham, jump aboard the Meon Valley Express for a flat and fast run along the disused Fareham to Alton line. All in aid of Guide Dogs.

• Entry: For the half marathon £12.50, full marathon £26.45

Ringwood Wessex Summer 10k - Friday 24 June

• Surface: Multi terrain

• Awards: Medals, trophies, winners’ prizes and goody bag

• Information: Take in the sights and sounds of the Moors Valley Country Park while you run for fun and raise awareness and funds for individuals and families affected by autism.

• Entry: 10K entry is £12 in advance or £17 on the day. 2K entry is £5 or £7 on the day.

Twixmas 10k (Fareham) - Tuesday 27 December

• Distance: 10K

• Surface: Multi terrain

• Awards: Medals, trophies and winners’ prizes

• Information: Taking part in Twixmas will mean you are raising money for Guide Dogs. It’s a lovely route, taking you along the Portchester shoreline joining the Fareham Creek trail to Cams Hall.

• Entry: £10 affiliated, £12 unaffiliated in advance. £12 affiliated, £14 unaffiliated on the day.

Waterlooville Summer Plod - Sunday 3 July

• Distance: 21 miles

• Surface: Trail

• Awards: Medals and prizes for the winners

• Information: It maybe a little hilly, but the stunning trails around the Meon Valley offer the best views. There’s a time limit of 5 hours 30 minutes so you may have to shorten the course. The run starts from Clanfield Scout Hut.

• Entry: £20 affiliated and £22 unaffiliated in advance.

Yateley 10k Series - Wednesday 1 June, 13 July, 3 August

• Distance: 10K

• Surface: Grass

• Awards: Medals for all finishers. Trophies for the winners.

• Information: Starting and finishing in the Yateley Centre the course is a little up and down. However it is all in a good cause as about a third of the entrance fees are donated to charities and organisations within the local area

• Entry: Affiliated racers: £13 for one race, £24 for two races or £33 for the series. Non-affiliated racers: £15 for one race, £28 for two or £39 for the series.

Kingsclere Hampshire Hoppit Trail - Sunday 19 June

• Distance: marathon and half marathon

• Surface: Grass and trails (occasional quiet roads)

• Awards: Every finisher gets an engraved beer glass full of Hoppit ale.

• Information: Run along some famous long distance paths including the Wayfarers Walk and the Harrow Way. Both scenic, single-lap courses that start and end in Kingsclere. You’ll reach some of the highest points in Hampshire with views across the county.

• Entry: £34 affiliated or £37 unaffiliated (marathon). £30 affiliated or £33 unaffiliated (half). Entry online only.

Portsmouth RNLI Tri Adventure Race - Sunday 11 September

• Distance: Kayak 2 or 4 miles / run 6km / bike 26km

• Surface: Water and cycle-ways

• Awards: Food and refreshment

• Information: It’s a new format for this year’s Adventure Race. Both will be run/kayak/cycle with a long and standard length version. Kayak will be two or four miles (your kayak is supplied) from Portsmouth Watersports Centre or the Ship Inn back to the Lifeboat station. Then jump on your bike and ride the 25km around Langstone Harbour. As you paddle, run and ride the route there will be a selection of physical and mental challenges with clues and tasks for you to collect.
