It’s official! The dates of the eagerly anticipated BBC adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s iconic novel ‘Jamaica Inn’ have been confirmed. This special three-part series starts on Easter Monday at 9pm on BBC One and will run for three consecutive evenings (21 – 23 April 2014)
There can be no better way to relive the history behind the story than a visit to the ‘real life’ Jamaica Inn (www.jamaicainn.co.uk) on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.
Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel ‘Jamaica Inn’ was adapted by Emma Frost, writer of The White Queen and was directed by BAFTA-winning director Philippa Lowthorpe (Call The Midwife). It has been produced by Origin Pictures for BBC One.
Set in 1821 against the forbidding backdrop of windswept Cornish moors, the story follows the journey of young and spirited Mary Yellan who is forced to live with her Aunt Patience at Jamaica Inn after the death of her mother.
The adaptation features a fantastic cast starring Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey) as Mary Yellan, Matthew McNulty (The Paradise, Room At The Top) as Jem Merlyn and Sean Harris (The Borgias, Southcliffe) as Joss Merlyn.
Several scenes were filmed on the unique and breathtaking Cornish landscape including footageshot on Holywell Bay, Bodmin Moor, Rough Tor and Cheese Ring.
Grant Montgomery, the adaptation’s Production Designer, said: “As the Production Designer for Jamaica Inn, I was responsible for getting the right look and feel of this notorious and iconic coaching Inn on screen. As part of my research, we visited the original Jamaica Inn for inspiration to see first-hand what had inspired Daphne du Maurier. It was fascinating to visit and I hope viewers will feel we have captured the drama and spirit of this legendary landmark in our drama”.
