Devon Wildlife Trust is offering a particularly special Mother’s Day treat as it opens one of its many nature reserves for everybody to see. A fantastic display of wild daffodils come into their spring peak and are on show completely for free.
Dunsford, near Exeter is home to England’s largest collection of daffodils and is one of 50 reserves looked after by the trust, which is also the county’s leading environmental voluntary body, with more than 32,000 members.
The charity’s Steve Hussey said: “With the River Teign running through its heart, picturesque woodland walks and wonderful wildlife Dunsford attracts more than 40,000 visitors a year. It’s a very special place at any time but in spring with the daffodils on show it makes the perfect place to take Mum and the rest of the family.”
After years of campaigning to change the laws surrounding the picking of wild flowers, the trust is very proud to present this natural spectacle. It was only 50 years ago that the daffodil was becoming a rare sight because of unthinking visitors and scheduled tours that would pick the ground dry of these beautiful flowers, leaving them in a dangerous decline.
Thankfully this is now a problem of the past and this delightful nature reserve has its doors wide open on the B3212 just inside the Dartmoor National Park boundary between Moretonhampstead and Exeter.
