Audley End House and Gardens is set for another sensational summer of musical entertainment with four knockout shows taking place in August. Saturday, August 3 sees The Greatest 80s Party…Ever come to town with stars including Kim Wilde, ABC, Go West, Imagination, Odyssey, Cutting Crew and Sonia reproducing the magic of the 1980s. On Sunday, August 4 Michael Ball Sings the Musicals, performing with the British Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Callum McLeod. Ronan Keating headlines on Saturday, August 10, supported by American actress and singer songwriter Elizabeth McGovern’s band Sadie and the Hotheads as well as fantastic local artist Joanna Eden. Finally, on Sunday, August 11, Katherine Jenkins brings her sensational sound to Audley End, accompanied by The National Symphony Orchestra, and a very special guest yet to be confirmed.

June at the House

A brand new summer season of events has been launched at Wivenhoe House, held in an elegant marquee in the landscaped gardens that surround this magnificently restored four star country house hotel. Rock at the House kicks off proceedings on Saturday, June 22 with the headline act of Hugh Cornwell, the original guitarist, singer and main songwriter in The Stranglers. There is a glittering parade of folk favourites on Sunday, June 23 supporting Show of Hands, who won the Best Duo and Best Original Song in the 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, one of the most established and respected duos on the scene, share the bill with Eleanor McEvoy and Colvin Quarmby alongside a host of other acclaimed artists.

Cricket fans should make a diary date for Sunday, June 30 when Blofeld and Baxter, aka Henry Blofeld and his commentary box partner Peter Baxter, will be entertaining the audience with tales from Test Match Special. The season culminates on July 1 with a professional performance of Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan.

Fling Festival

Chelmsford’s Central Park, Bell Meadow and Sky Blue Pasture

The Fling Festival of Assorted Amusements returns to Chelmsford on Saturday, July 6. The Fling offers an intriguing alternative to the usual night out and alongside playful activities, stars a fabulous cast of professional artistes and Chelmsford talent who will explore, seduce and surprise your senses through performances, sideshows, poetry, a huge silent disco and much more. The Fling is about the magnitude of small wonders you’ll discover rather than headline acts, but there are live performances by The Correspondents, one of the top attractions of the music festival scene.

Cambridge Touring Theatre takes families on a merry romp to far-away oceans this summer with its swashbuckling musical version of Treasure Island. This all new adaptation follows the adventures of two young heroes - Jim and Ruth - as they find a treasure map and set sail under the guidance of pirate, Long John Silver. Along the way they’ll learn important lessons about loyalty and friendship - and discover whether pirates can be trusted!

2013 marks the 12th year of the Stanley Hall Opera, with a wonderful concert given by Dame Felicity Lott and Friends on Sunday, June 23 featuring a mix of arias and ensembles from opera and musical theatre, from Mozart to Noel Coward and Rossini to Cole Porter. Guests are invited to arrive from 11am onwards to set up their picnics and walk round the garden to view the sculpture exhibition by Kate Denton. The concert will begin at 12.45pm and there will be a 90 minute break for lunch at 1.30pm before the concert resumes at 3pm.

Summer Evening Jazz

On July 6, the Rotary Club of Ingatestone holds its 17th Summer Evening Jazz in the grounds of Ingatestone Hall. Originally run by the former Shenfield and Hutton Rotary Club, with the support of sponsors and ticket sales, this popular event has amassed more than £131,789 from the previous 16 years.

The continued generosity of Lord Petre allows approximately 1,000 of the paying public to enjoy the beautiful setting of Ingatestone Hall. Every year people bring their families and their picnics, and settle down to listen to an evening of classic New Orleans jazz, provided by the Frog Island Jazz Band and Bob Dwyer’s Hot Seven. This year there is also a licensed bar run by Brentwood Brewing Company with real ales on tap, so no need to bring your own drinks. Another highlight is the Umbrella Parade which simulates a New Orleans wake procession, with the bands leading the ‘mourners’ with their gaily decorated umbrellas around the Hall gardens.
