How well do you know the castles of Yorkshire?
Yorkshire has a number of fine castles, some have fallen into ruin and are now effectively just piles of rubble, while others have retained their splendour and remain a popular spot for tourists throughout the year.
There are a number of landmarks that do have castle in their name, but are not what you would classify as a castle.
Castle Howard is a majestic stately home in North Yorkshire that has been the home of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family for more than 300 years.
Wentworth Castle Gardens and Stainborough Park is the only grade one listed landscape in South Yorkshire. It contains a fascinating collection of 26 listed buildings and monuments, including the majestic Stainborough Castle, a romantic folly built by Thomas Wentworth in 1730.
Castle Hill, just outside Huddersfield is not the location of a castle, but of a 100 ft folly called the Victoria Tower, which was built in the 19th century to commemorate sixty years of Queen Victoria’s reign.
Castle Carr is an abandoned stately home in the Calder Valley that had a beautifully curated garden as part of its extensive grounds. This estate is now closed to the public, but there is a annual event that opens the grounds to the public.
