Derbyshire has many beautiful valleys that bring people to the county, looking for the unspoilt natural beauty of the Peak District.

Dovedale is owned by the National Trust, and annually attracts a million visitors, while Monsal Dale is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.

The Hope Valley and Upper Derwent Valley are both in the north of the county are home to some of the most popular places in the Peak District, these include Hathersage, Castleton, Hope and Eyam.

While these valleys in the north of the county have remained unchanged throughout time, there are some valleys in the south of the county that have played an important part in the course of human history.

The factory system developed in the Derwent Valley was a key element of the of the story of the Industrial Revolution, and the the historic Derwent Valley Mills complex between Cromford and Derby was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

To the east, the area around the the River Erewash has a rich history of the collieries, lace factories and foundries – linked to a network of canals and railways.
