Ambitious plans have been launched in Southampton for the city to host a massive sailing week in 2017. Details were unveiled recently at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club with local entrepreneur Chris Rees behind the new venture.

Chris, who already runs the successful ABP Southampton Half Marathon, said support for Southampton Sailing Week is really gathering pace, more than a year before the event is due to be held.

“The city has a great sailing heritage and the south coast is a mecca for sailing and water-based activity so it seemed logical to celebrate everything in one huge event,” said Chris.

“The launch event provided the perfect opportunity to showcase the range of events planned for Southampton Sailing Week and we are thrilled with the response from clubs, marinas and sailors,” he continued.

Highlights of the week, which will be held in May 2017, include six days of racing in the Solent, regatta-style entertainment each evening and the opportunity for anyone to get involved and try a water-based activity. The week will culminate in a parade of sail off Mayflower Park and a Sea City Parade from the waterfront to Guildhall Square.

“We want to celebrate sailing in the south and invite as many clubs, organisations and people to get involved,” said Chris. Details of the event are on www.southamptonsailingweek.co.uk.
