Paul and Antonia Whitbread, owners of the recently refurbished Royal Oak at Leighterton, near Tetbury, welcomed regulars to a Cheltenham Festival 2011 preview evening with top trainer Kim Bailey. Kim has nearly 1,000 winners to his name, and is the only National Hunt trainer still training who has won ‘the big 3’, the Grand National with Mr Frisk, The Champion Hurdle with Alderbrook and The Cheltenham Gold Cup with Master Oats. Kim now trains his string at Thorndale Farm, near Andoversford.Paul and Antonia aim to create the ultimate country inn, serving fabulous locally sourced food, good wine, well-kept ales and great hospitality. The beautiful Grade II listed building underwent an eight-month renovation, which saw it stripped back and carefully restored, ensuring it stayed faithful to its origins. The result is a bright contemporary space that gives a nod to the rustic, complemented by restored antiques and original features.
