1)Michael Portillo came to Suffolk with his TV show, visiting Ipswich, Leiston Longshop Museum and the Middy Railway at Wetheringsett. He rode the footplate of steam locomotive LNER Y7.
2) Snowdrops. There are lots of places to see them in bloom. Roger Harvey’s Garden Plants Nursery at Thurston has an annual sale. This year’s is on January 20.
3)They were twin foals which is very rare - the odds of them surviving, along with mum, was thought to be one in 10,000.
4) The London Marathon. Mac Speake has taken part in every race since the first one in 1981. The 2018 event is on April 22.
5) Director of the Suffolk Show. Bee is the first woman to hold the position in the show’s 185-year history.
6) A German Zeppelin was shot down by aircraft and crashed at Theberton, killing 16 of the 19 airmen on board. In 2017 village residents held a service of commemoration in St Peter’s Church.
7)Dani runs the ferry service across the Blyth between Southwold and Walberswick. Her shed, on the Walberswick side, is full of boating and ferrymen memorabilia.
8)In 2002 Finisterre was renamed Fitzoy after Robert Fitzroy who was born in Ampton in 1805. Fitzroy was captain of Darwin’s ship, The Beagle. He was fascinated with recording the weather. He published the first public weather forecast in August 1861 and formed the organisation that would become the Met Office.
9) Lentils, considered difficult to grow in the UK, but there is historic evidence they used to be grown across the UK.
10) We Didn’t Mean to Go To Sea by Arthur Ransome, who lived on the Shotley Peninsula for a while. .
11) As head brewer at Greene King, Bernard Tickner created Abbot Ale. He was made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2017.
12) Suffolk! After a suggestion by Mark Murphy, BBC Radio Suffolk’s breakfast show host, and support from the East Anglian Daily Times, people held special events and celebrated life in our lovely county. Put the date in your diary for 2018!
