In a display to rival RHS Garden Wisley’s Butterflies in the Glasshouse, which is open until Sunday March 6, Kew Gardens adds its own vibrant hues to winter with Orchids 2016, featuring a spectacular carnival of dazzling colour.

Guildford Shakespeare Company begins its 10th anniversary year with a production of The Winter’s Tale in the atmospheric setting of the newly-restored Holy Trinity Church. Caroline Devlin returns to direct following her triumphs with King Lear, Othello and Macbeth.

Compéred by Eagle Radio’s Peter Gordon, the annual pancake races are always good for a dose of batter-fuelled madness. Highlights include Guildford and Godalming councils going head to head in the County Club Cup. It’s also an opportunity to see Guildford MP Anne Milton cooking hundreds of pancakes. Saturday February 13 to Sunday February 21

Enjoy a great day out at Bocketts Farm this February half-term with the start of the spring lambing. There are up to 90 lambs expected from Friday February 12 onwards, so you’ve got a good chance of seeing one newly-born. Other daily activities include pony rides, tractor rides, animal handling and pig racing, as well as the large indoor area with a giant heated playbarn.

The Lightbox’s latest exhibition, John Constable: Observing the Weather, provides an in-depth examination of the artist’s fascination with the elements. The show focuses on Constable’s unique ability to combine scientific observation with artistic skill in recording changes in weather phenomena. For the full story, see page 72.

Expect woolly madness at Farnham Maltings at their annual festival of knitting, unravel. The event showcases over 80 contemporary exhibitors selling yarn and yarn-related accessories, as well as a programme of knitting and crochet exhibitions, talks and bookable workshops.
