Hertfordshire has plenty of quaint, pretty villages. Herts Life picks out 10 of the best whether you're planning a day-trip or a house move!

1. Colney Heath
The large village of Colney Heath is a traditional place with a true village atmosphere. There is even a quaint windmill now converted and being used as a house.

2. Preston
Preston, home to around 300 people, is a wonderful example of a pretty Hertfordshire village although it’s not without its share of history. With buildings including the supposedly haunted ruined Minsden Chapel and also the site of the Princess Helena College, there is a lot to be seen here.

3. Braughing
The village of Braughing is famous for the Braughing Pork Sausage originally made in 1954, the recipe remaining unchanged since that time. This charming village has lots of character.

4. Cottered
Located in beautiful rural Hertfordshire is the village of Cottered, a quaint and quintessentially British village with a strong community feel.

5. Kings Langley
The village of Kings Langley has a rich history that is waiting to be explored with everything that a classic village needs including a traditional pub.

6. Barkway
Imagine thatched rooves and church bells ringing in a country village and you may be picturing the lovely Barkway. With a population of just over 650, you can round off a peaceful country stroll with a pint at the Tally Ho, the local pub.

7. Croxley Green
The cosy village of Croxley Green has everything that a traditional village should: a green where children play surrounded by old buildings, a yearly village fair including a Maypole dancing session and a few traditional local pubs to keep the locals entertained.

8. Bovingdon
Bovingdon village with cosy pubs and churches and a community feeling to it has been home to interesting characters including the Olympic bobsleigh champion Tony Nash and is located next to a disused World War II airfield that has been used as a location for several films.

9. Redbourn
The historic village of Redbourn has won many Village of the Year awards throughout the years and it isn’t hard to see why: with gorgeous houses and a rich history, there are also many tourist attractions nearby such as the Redbourn Village Museum (house in a Grade II listed silk mill house) and just one mile from the site of the Hertfordshire County Show.

10. St Ippolyts
Located just south of Hitchin is the small parish village of St Ippolyts. With timber houses and rickety buildings galore this village is steeped in history.
