Meanwhile, Rob Johnston, chief executive of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, has urged local people to send out a positive message by taking photographs and using social media showing life continuing as normal in this beautiful part of the UK.

The #spiritofcumbria and the #cumbriaisopen hashtags are going viral, as they people respond to the call. Mr Johnston said: ‘The message is Cumbria is open for business and we can all help with that. People need to get out there, take pictures of themselves having fun and enjoying Cumbria.

‘Tweet it, record it and get the message out to friends on social media and other media will pick up on it. Then businesses need to get into their social networks and get message out - it is incumbent on everybody to join in.’
