Long considered a jewel in Norfolk’s crown, the pretty Georgian town of Holt is well known for its thriving high street, excellent arts scene and pretty surroundings. The town has a rich history with parts dating back to Roman times, but a major fire in 1708 destroyed most of those early buildings, including the church. In the years that followed it was rebuilt using the distinctive stone and flint which is such an important part of its character today. The high street and market place retain their Georgian charm, but there are also small stone Victorian yards which have been transformed into little tucked away havens full of quaint shops, cafes and galleries waiting to be discovered.

There are many beautiful properties around the town and nearby, from classic Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces to listed flint cottages and traditional farmhouses. There are also newer houses and bungalows, many of which have been built in keeping with the town’s history using traditional stonework.

For those seeking a large period home with plenty of character – a beautiful five bedroomed, detached, Regency townhouse, complete with annex, is currently on the market for around £800,000 – however, it is possible to buy a four bedroomed detached house from around £400,000.

There is a good choice of bungalows, starting at around £200,000 and Victorian terraces available from £150,000. There are some semi-detached properties from around £230,000, and the town has enjoyed areas of new development, including a selection of apartments for older people, priced from £130,000.

For families, the town and surrounding villages offer a good choice of schools, plenty of green space and amenities. Gresham’s School, which has a long history, is on the edge of the town and is a co-educational school for both day pupils and boarders, from nursery to 18.

There is excellent shopping, with a good mixture of independent stores and high street chains, with the celebrated department store Bakers and Larners at its heart. Whether you love fashion, antiques, art, homewares or country accessories, there is something for everyone – even attracting the Duchess of Cambridge, who lives nearby at Anmer. There is also a variety of top quality cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Throughout the year, there are events and festivals held in the town, bringing together residents, schools, businesses and organisations to create a buzzing community spirit. The annual Holt Festival also attracts crowds from all over the country with its eclectic line-up of acclaimed musicians, writers, artists, broadcasters and stage performers.

For those who love the outdoors, the town is surrounded by beautiful Norfolk countryside and is only a short drive to the coast. The award-winning Holt Country Park is only a mile away and is a fantastic place to explore or enjoy some peace of quiet, whatever the time of year. The woodland has a wide variety of trees, flowers and plants as well as bountiful wildlife.
