Tanyard Farm in Shamley Green was acquired by the Virgin mogul’s parents in 1963 and is on the market with Sotheby’s for £4 million
Sir Richard Branson may well be worth an estimated £3.325 billion and own property across the globe including his own British Virgin Island, Necker, but he grew up in the Surrey village of Shamley Green and his childhood home has recently gone up for sale.
Tanyard Farm, which the Virgin Group founder mentions in his 1998 autobiography, Losing My Virginity, was where Branson’s first business ventures began with the planting of a Christmas tree farm within the 1.4 acre grounds. Branson had hoped to sell the trees but hadn’t counted on rabbits eating their way through the plantings before they were anywhere near fully grown.
A four-bedroom red brick home, on the market with Sotheby’s International Realty for £4 million, Tanyard Farm is set behind electric gates and has a wealth of period features inside including beamed and often double height ceilings.
The beautifully painted bespoke kitchen has masses of work surfaces, a separate larder cupboard and leads to both the garden conservatory and the dining room, while the family room has its own entrance and can be shut off from the rest of the house creating the perfect live-in staff quarters with bedroom and en suite above. There is also potential to expand as required with lapsed planning for additional buildings in the garden.

On the west wing of the house there is a further reception room, a cloakroom and an office overlooking the garden, making this a great property for those working from home. Upstairs, each of the bedrooms is a good double size and three have en suite bathrooms.
The house benefits from a good-sized front garden and large rear garden, which is laid to lawn and is bordered by woodland and pastureland. There are several patios and seating areas and other buildings with lapsed planning permissions.
