1) Discover their style
If possible, learn which designs your loved one likes and identify their unique style to ensure the ring is the perfect fit.

Louise suggests, “Get an idea of the different options by shopping around - make sure to ask the jeweller questions about the cut of the diamond, as this has a significant impact on how the ring sparkles.”

3) Check that the diamond is certified
The most important step to buying an engagement ring is checking that the diamond is certified. Certified diamonds are higher quality and are almost always natural, without having undergone any treatment.
“It’s crucial that the diamond in the ring you’re considering is certified, as this verifies the stone’s quality and ensures you are getting exactly what you pay for,” says Louise.
“It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and make the mistake of buying a non-certified diamond, especially if you don’t know the difference, so this is definitely something to bear in mind.”
4) Consider the type of metal
“You may not know about the different metals used for rings and which one is best,” Louise explains.
“If you’re after white metal, I would recommend choosing platinum as this is more durable and cost-effective.”
White gold is yellow gold with a rhodium coating. It’s a softer metal so will need to be serviced almost every year. Platinum rings will stay cleaner for longer and will rarely need reinforcing.
