1) Discover their style

If possible, learn which designs your loved one likes and identify their unique style to ensure the ring is the perfect fit.

“Different engagement ring cuts include Princess, Oval and Pear,” says Louise.

“Although all beautiful choices, take time to learn about your partner and find out their likes and dislikes so you pick the ideal ring for them.”

2) Gain inspiration

Louise suggests, “Get an idea of the different options by shopping around - make sure to ask the jeweller questions about the cut of the diamond, as this has a significant impact on how the ring sparkles.”

If you’ve got a vision of the kind of ring you’re looking for, but can’t find it in-store, Laings can make it bespoke.

“Sometimes, you can’t find what you want, no matter how many jewellery shops you browse. Laings bespoke team can create a unique ring for your partner based on your specifications.”

3) Check that the diamond is certified

The most important step to buying an engagement ring is checking that the diamond is certified. Certified diamonds are higher quality and are almost always natural, without having undergone any treatment.

“It’s crucial that the diamond in the ring you’re considering is certified, as this verifies the stone’s quality and ensures you are getting exactly what you pay for,” says Louise.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and make the mistake of buying a non-certified diamond, especially if you don’t know the difference, so this is definitely something to bear in mind.”

4) Consider the type of metal

“You may not know about the different metals used for rings and which one is best,” Louise explains.

“If you’re after white metal, I would recommend choosing platinum as this is more durable and cost-effective.”

White gold is yellow gold with a rhodium coating. It’s a softer metal so will need to be serviced almost every year. Platinum rings will stay cleaner for longer and will rarely need reinforcing.

5) Ask an expert for advice

“Laings’ experience in engagement rings is extensive, and our jewellers are very knowledgeable,” Louise says.

As a family-run business, Laings prides itself on its heritage and reputation within the communities it serves.

“We’re incredibly selective with the type of diamonds we choose and offer high quality craftmanship and exclusive brands.”

“Buying an engagement ring should be a special experience, and our friendly team of skilled jewellers are here to help you find the perfect one.”
