Q and A

Holly Williamson, beautician at The Strand in Chelmsford, speaks to Holly Eells about the hot trends for this summer

How long have you been in the beauty industry and what do you do?

I have been in the industry for more than two years and I have worked for The Strand for a year. I’m a professional beautician in HD brows, extensions, massages, Dermalogica facials, spray tanning, waxing, tints and more.

What are the trends for spring/summer at the moment?

HD Brows and the big eyebrows are very on trend this season. HD Brow is a unique seven-step treatment to get the ultimate well-groomed, high definition eyebrows. It involves waxing, tinting, shaping them to the bone structure, threading and teaching clients how to manage their eyebrows. It’s an in depth treatment that takes about 45 minutes.

Anything else we should watch out for?

People have moved onto ‘squinty’ nails. These are pointy extensions, that square off at the top instead of a full point.

What do people request most in your salon?

Shellac manicures are still really popular, because they last for two to three weeks and have a mirror shine with a flawless finish. The manicure takes about 30 minutes and it dries straight away. It’s great as it’s not too time consuming and it doesn’t chip. Coral and lighter tone nail polishes are perfect for this season.

The Lower Bun

Spray the hair evenly with Eufora Elevating Hairspray to give your hair a bit of hold. Then you need to loosely curl all of you hair with a pair of straighteners.

After all your hair is loosely curled, brush your hair down to the nape of the neck and securely pin the hair in place with some kirby grips. (Cross the clips over to ensure they stay in place)

Backcomb all the hair slightly, to thicken the hair ready for the next stage. Then sub divide the hair into three sections and curl around your finger into a horizontal roll effect. Repeat this process for the other two sections.

Generously use hairspray all over your hair to make sure your style is secure and stays in place.

Spring Glow

Use an illuminating primer under your foundation for instant radiance. After foundation, try using a peach cream blush applied with finger tips to give an English Rose look to the cheeks, and dust over the face with powder and bronzer

The secret to a good eye shadow application is to keep blending until you think you’re done, and then blend some more! Work with a darker colour on the outer edges and a lighter colour in the middle to open up the eyes, and blend in circular movements inwards towards the centre of the eye. Purple, plum and pale pinks work well together. A highlighter under the brow bone will also brighten the eyes

Finish the look with a peach or coral colour lipstick and add a clear gloss over the top

Try something new

Oriental Fusion is a treatment that commences with a foot ritual to calm your senses and relax the feet. It continues with an oil and baobab seed exfoliation to soften and smooth the back of the body, before a delicate floral Oriental Oil is applied. You can then ease your soul with an exquisite massage to the back of the body with obsidian and onyx precious stones. Rich in iron, these stones are known for creating an inner calm and allowing the body’s energy to flow fluently through the body, as well as detoxifying and aiding circulation. Then your therapist will select a combination of facial products to suit your skin, starting with a deep exfoliation. Your face is then massaged using the stones, combined with rosehip, which is known for its healing and regenerating properties. Your skin, mind and soul will be left feeling revitalised and relaxed of facial tensions. Find out more at Clarice House in Colchester on 01206 734 301.
