When was the school founded?
The school was founded in 1908 by Miss Alice Atkins in an old perfume factory. Two years later she purchased a farmer’s field in Tadworth and constructed a large school building to house the growing number of pupils. The school remains on this site today and has grown and developed into a modern, forward-thinking prep but we hope that Miss Atkins would be pleased to know that her original school building is still at the heart of it.
What would you say that you are most renowned for today?
We are proud of our reputation as a caring, family school with excellent academic results. Our pupils leave as well-rounded individuals ready to embrace the challenges of senior school. We became part of the Reigate Grammar School family in February 2017 and our year 5 pupils can now benefit from early offer entrance arrangements to Reigate Grammar School should this be their chosen path.
Do you have a school motto?
Yes, it is Ex Tenebris In Lucem. Literally it means out of the darkness, into the light, but we like to think of it as enlightenment through learning.
What do you think are the most interesting changes taking place in the education system?
The increasing emphasis on growth mind-set and the importance of mental health and well-being. We embrace both at Chinthurst and will continue to focus on these going forward.
Who are your most famous alumni?
The actor, Warwick Davis, the politician, Alistair Darling and the Clayton brothers who play rugby for Harlequins and Bath.
And have you any stars of the future attending?
Many! We have outstanding musicians, sports people and artists across the school. More importantly, all our children are developing great strength of character and resilience to ensure they can fulfil their potential and become the stars of the future.
Tell us the most surprising story about the school.
We had a beautiful pair of ornate metal gates at the entrance to the school (each one more than two metres tall) which were stolen one morning, in broad daylight, during school drop off.
