Bridgwater College is preparing to open its doors to employers, school leavers and their families for the second year running, with its annual Apprenticeship Open Evening being held at the College on Thursday 15 March between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

The event aims to put the spotlight on apprenticeships at a time when the value of practical training alongside theoretical learning is increasingly being recognised.

A wide range of businesses will be attending the event, including EDF, Sassi Holford, Bristol City Football Club, Gerber Juice, Mulberry and Maunsel House, to name a few. The vast majority of the 50 companies attending the event either currently employ or have employed an apprentice and will be offering tips and advice to youngsters seeking a similar career path. Several of them will be offering apprenticeship places to the right candidates – last year Josh Davies, now aged 19 and of Taunton, was snapped up by the College’s marketing department and is now well into the first year of his Business Administration Apprenticeship.

There will also be advice on a wide range of full-time courses, including AS/A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, as well as vocational courses. Tours and practical demonstrations will take place throughout the evening, and guest speakers include high profile advocates for apprenticeships such as apprentice employer John Cullum, the High Sheriff of Somerset (and father of the famous jazz musician Jamie Cullum), and Jack Fleming, Employer Services Manager, at the National Apprenticeship Service.

Andy Berry, Head of Business Development at the College, said, “As the largest provider of apprenticeship training in Somerset, we have 650 apprentices currently studying throughout the College, and we are introducing new frameworks – or subjects – all the time. Recent examples include Graphics, Game Keeping and Warehousing, highlighting that we are responsive to employer demands and that as a College, we are likely to have a course that is right for every individual. We look forward to seeing people next Thursday and hopefully witnessing some would-be apprentices meet their new employers!”

Guests are invited to beat the queues and register in advance for the event by visiting www.bridgwater.ac.uk or calling the Schools Marketing team on 01278 441216.
