A letter from Withington Girls’ School Headmistress, Sarah Haslam.
isitors often comment on the special atmosphere they find here at Withington. It is always wonderful to receive such positive feedback - but it is with great pleasure that we find this sentiment echoed by our own girls.
From our youngest Juniors through to our Sixth Form leavers, we find time and again in the surveys we run in School, references to the special Withington environment that both supports and empowers our pupils. Girls and staff alike praise the sense of community and the happy, family ambience – and whilst we celebrate our consistently outstanding record in public examinations and places gained at the most selective universities, we are also extremely proud of the happily informal atmosphere, thriving co-curricular programme and the spirit of camaraderie that is so evident here.
It is this engagement with education in its broadest sense which characterises the unique environment at Withington.
True to the vision of our Founders, our girls aim high. With their achievements in all areas, both within and beyond the classroom, recognised as ‘exceptional’ in the last inspection report, our girls have boundless opportunities to discover their talents, whether their interests lie in music, sport, the arts or elsewhere.
It is our aim that our young people leave school at ease with themselves and ready to face with confidence the challenges of life beyond. We are always therefore delighted to hear from former students, many of whom have gone on to carve successful careers across a wide range of fields, that their Withington journey instilled in them a firm belief that anything is possible. Our alumnae network is an integral part of our School community and I never fail to be extremely appreciative of the extent to which they give back to our pupils past and present, continuing to provide support in a variety of ways long after they have left us.
For many reasons, Withington is undoubtedly recognised as one of the country’s leading schools - but looking to the future we do not rest on our laurels and we cannot stand still. Our excellent teaching needs to be matched with modern first class facilities. That is why we are currently in the process of an ambitious development programme, which has already included a new WGS Junior School building and community hub area, along with improved Science and Design and

Technology facilities, and the next exciting phase of our plans will see an upgrade to our sports amenities.
Our goal is to ensure that we are able to continue to offer an excellent, holistic education, not only to our present cohort, but to the next generation of Withington girls.
As Withington’s new headmistress, I believe we have much to celebrate and exciting times ahead. For anyone considering WGS for their daughters, I extend a warm invitation to visit us at one of our Open Days in the Autumn or to make an individual appointment to see round the school. We look forward to meeting you.
