Are you tired of your job, looking for a new challenge or simply want to learn a new skill? Good news, you’re not having a mid-life crisis. You’re looking for a change and if it will make you happy then we say go for it!
There are plenty of opportunities out there to help adults build upon their skills, pick up a new hobby and completely change their career path and they should be utilised to the fullest. No one wants to live their life full of ‘what ifs’ so take a leap of faith, dust off those textbooks, enrol in a class and learn something new.
Have you moved town or been made redundant and don’t know where to begin in your new job hunt?
Applying for a job is a predominantly online-based journey and is a complete minefield to those who have never needed to use a computer before. This is why The Lifestyle Management Company have created a ‘return to work’ course aimed at the 50+ group and the computer-illiterate.
Teaching life skills to fill the generation gap, CV workshops, basic ICT skills such as learning to use emails and Office programmes, social media training, plus how to use EBay and online banking, the company is your one-stop-shop for discovering how to use all modern day online facilities that so many of us take for granted. Lifestyle manager and trainer Sheryl Myers says: ‘For those looking for these skills, our company is a little gold mine.’
With flexible teaching hours and a range of packages available including one-to-one sessions, in their Chingford classrooms and refurbished offices, teaching can fit around busy lives. The classes are suitable for all ages too. ‘We have a real focus on the 50+ market. We aim to build confidence, re-educate and retrain people to help them get back into work. However, we also have many students who are looking for a career change, are going back to work after maternity leave, and also those who are straight out of college,’ Sheryl adds.

Art is more than just a hobby for so many people. It is a stress reliever, a form of expression and naturally therapeutic. There are so many mediums to discover and techniques to perfect, so if you’re looking to delve into the wonderful world of art, head to Adelaine Frank’s art classes held every Wednesday at Loughton Methodist Church.
‘We adapt to each student’s needs and give them guidance towards developing their artistic skills,’ says Adelaine Frank. ‘We have the added benefit of two experience tutors which offers more opportunity for one-to-one tuition. We cater for everyone - art is for all age - and we are keen to ensure that our students enjoy the wonderful peace and satisfaction that comes from being part of our class,’ she says.
The 14-week long classes are structured and include a broad curriculum from learning how to draw with the correct proportion, perspective and scale to learning new painting techniques.
Change of career
One of the biggest and most lucrative industries today is beauty. With new products and procedures constantly being developed, there is always something new to be learned. ‘We pride ourselves on offering first class beauty training for both school leavers and adults looking to start new careers and develop their current skills,’ explains Amelia Cooper, beauty lecturer at Beautec Beauty Academy in Loughton.
So if you think it’s too late to change your vocation, think again. ‘So many of our students have decided later on in life that they would like a more flexible career, one which can work around their family life, or they wish to explore a new adventure after a long career in the city,’ Amelia explains. ‘At Beautec, we make sure we keep adult classes and school leaver’s classes separate as we understand that their needs are very different. We also offer funding for adult courses which aids people’s decisions to change their career.’
So what are you waiting for? If you want to switch your notebook for a wax pot, contact Beautec today.
There’s a wealth of extra education available for kiddies too. Whether your child is struggling in a particular subject or needs a little guidance before sitting their eleven plus, you can feel safe in the knowledge that there are a host of tutoring opportunities available, right on your doorstep.
Starting at classes for four year olds all the way to degree level, Tutor Doctor 1 to 1 Tuition, (formerly Tutor Doctor Loughton) provides personal one-to-one tuition on all subjects. ‘Our sessions are one-to-one so the tutor can focus on the specific areas that the student needs support with or would like to develop which isn’t always manageable in a classroom,’ Jocelyn Young, director of Tutor Doctor 1 to 1 Tuition says. ‘This format means that the tutor can tailor the lesson to the specific learning style of the student,’ she adds.
Every child has different learning styles and habits, and some prefer group situations. Learn to Gain offers small group tuition to classes of no more than eight. ‘Every child has more potential in them,’ says Alana Brennan, director at Learn to Gain.
‘Extra tuition can help children build confidence in subjects and also get them into the best schools.’ With a strong focus on the eleven plus, Learn to Gain offer mock exams and specific classes to aid and monitor children’s progress to help them achieve a place in a grammar school. ‘Education is so competitive. Today, it seems you have to come out with a degree,’ Alana adds. So give your child the best start with extra tuition from an early age
