Timothy Sinclair, head of Sompting Abbotts Preparatory School, hates spam, loves the countryside and left a career in Fine Art to become a teacher

If you hadn’t become a teacher, what do you think you would have done instead? Before going into teaching I worked in the Fine Art world for the Auctioneers Sotheby’s Billingshurst as a cataloguer of European Works of Art and Oriental rugs and carpets. My knowledge and experiences have helped enrich my teaching of History over the years, particularly when visiting historic houses and palaces such as Penshurst Place and Hampton Court. I believe having experience outside education gives one breadth in the classroom environment.

Was there any type of school dinner that you couldn’t stand? Spam!

What were your favourite lessons at school? Not surprisingly History which I have gone on to specialise in and still teach up to Year 8 for Common Entrance and Scholarship

So, what would you choose as your Desert Island Disc…? Contemporary would be Wish you were here by Pink Floyd.Classical would be Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto Second Movement – presuming I can choose two?!What is your favourite film? Not sure if I could single out an absolute favourite. Certainly The King’s Speech is a really compelling and well-made film telling the true story of one man’s courage and determination over adversity, combined with a little bit of Hollywood!

How do you like to relax when you get a bit of free time away from your work? A walk in the countryside with my wife, two children and dog, or gardening.

If you were made Prime Minister for one day, what’s the first thing you would do? Without a doubt, the reopening of the Defence Review. I cannot for one minute understand how as a country we can expect our servicemen and women to get involved in world conflicts and at the same time massively cut the defence budget and equipment putting lives at greater risk. For example to my mind, not having an aircraft carrier or Harrier jump jets makes no sense.
