Meeting Adrian Perks, head teacher of St Andrew’s School in Horsell
- Credit: SA
As the head teacher of St Andrew’s School in Horsell, Surrey, Adrian Perks is a busy man, but if he took on the additional responsibility of becoming the Prime Minister for the day, he says he would do his best to reduce unnecessary red tape
If you hadn’t become a teacher, what would you have done instead?
This is a difficult question to answer as I was still uncertain about my career path in my early twenties. I suspect I may have joined the forces in some capacity as I had a strong interest in this area at the time.
What were your favourite lessons when you were at school?
Like many of us, my most memorable lessons were those that were delivered by inspirational teachers. I was fortunate to have been taught by many characters who engaged me but I suppose it was my science lessons when I attended Gresham’s School, Norfolk, in the 1970s that would rank as the most entertaining and valuable.
Was there any type of school dinner that you couldn’t stand?
There was a time when I attended a prep school where the food served was less than wholesome. My dislike of milk puddings and prunes stems from those days!

How do you like to relax?
I find that playing sport and going to the gym provides me with the down time I need to recharge my batteries. I also find that teaching a set or two of maths and being with the children is vitally important in order to keep me grounded.
Which is your favourite film?
There are so many I have enjoyed over the years and I could list any number from different genres. If there has to be one then it would be Life is Beautiful, an Italian comedy-drama directed by and starring Roberto Benigni.
So, your Desert Island Disc...?
Another impossible choice! My favourite album from recent months is Ludovico Einaudi’s In a Time Lapse. Such beautiful haunting music.
If you were Prime Minister for one day, what’s the first thing you’d do?
I suspect I’d look carefully at the role of bureaucrats in society and try to ensure that our lives weren’t governed by unnecessary red tape.
