S. Anselm’s is a co-educational preparatory school in a magnificent Peak District setting offering both flexi and full boarding education alongside day children living locally. With a dedicated pre-prep area children can graduate up to the main prep school feeling supported and able to reach out to those new to the school. The school is surrounded by open countryside yet it is possible to walk to Bakewell town centre within 5 minutes.

The school has consistently delivered an outstanding education for many years achieving 100% pass rate at Common Entrance despite having no academic entry requirements. Significant numbers of scholarships are won most years including to Oundle, Malvern, Shrewsbury, Uppingham, Repton and Eton. The most recent inspection remarked that the “pupils were excited by their learning” and that “they take great pride in their work”.

For those whose learning needs are more complex our superb learning support department ensures that all children’s strengths are valued, their potential reached and all pupils proceed smoothly to the senior school of their choice.

S. Anselm’s superlative sports facilities and dedicated staff ensure the children have a firm introduction to the main sports of rugby, football, hockey and cricket for the boys and hockey, netball and rounders for the girls. The school has a Team GB coach to teach them swimming and this year children have reached the National Finals in many sports including swimming, netball, athletics and equestrian sports. There are 6 tennis courts in use in the summer term, indoor and outdoor cricket nets and a newly refurbished sports hall. All children represent the school in team sports and are included even if it is not their initial strength.

The Peak District setting means that the children can benefit from all the joys of running around outside; mountain biking and climbing often feature on the list of Sunday activities and all the hills make great sledging fields when it snows! The boarding staff are dedicated to both caring for the children and ensuring they have lots of fun. Parents are welcomed into the boarding life and many share the chapel and Sunday supper with their children. This family atmosphere ensures a continuation of home values encouraging manners and courtesy.

Most importantly of all the children are extraordinarily happy, exuding confidence and an awareness of those around them. The children’s manners and courtesy are often remarked upon by members of the public and this too was highlighted in the recent ISI report. They are helpful, cheerful, kind and interested in others. When they go on to their senior school the heads often comment on what remarkable children are sent from S. Anselm’s.

With a mainline railway station only 20 minutes from the school and under 2 hours rail journey from London why not come and visit S. Anselm’s? It offers escorted train travel and escorts to airports for those who need it. Come and see for yourselves, we look forward to receiving your call on 01629 812734 or email headmaster@anselms.co.uk.
