On the morning of Thursday 23rd January the pupils of Shebbear College Junior School set off on an epic challenge to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro. To clarify, this was actually their version of the mountain, namely the Junior School stairs. This challenge was undertaken to support parent Kate Griffin in her current attempt to climb the real Kilimanjaro for charity, raising funds and awareness for people suffering from Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Kate’s father suffers from this debilitating disease and this is her inspiration for the challenge.
Every child in the Junior School took part in the challenge, from Class One and Two upwards, with the children of the Kindergarten making the final push to the summit! By counting the steps in one circuit around the Junior School at the beginning, then recording the number of circuits made by each child, multiplied by the number of pupils involved, it was possible to calculate that a similar ascent to the real mountain had been achieved. Well done to all the pupils, and staff, who put in a tremendous effort. We are pleased to report that there were no casualties and nobody had to be air-lifted off the mountain. We all now wish Kate all the best with her Kilimanjaro challenge.
