Brighton College’s most recent boarding accommodation, New House, has been named one of the best new buildings in Britain by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
New House is one of only five buildings in the South East region to receive the institute’s prestigious national award today, alongside such internationally renowned buildings as The Shard and King’s Cross Station.
Constructed in flint and brick, New House was designed by architects Allies and Morrison to complement the original Sir George Gilbert Scott and Sir Thomas Graham Jackson buildings which form Brighton College’s historic quad. Inside, the house is modern and beautifully appointed.
Announcing the award, RIBA commented: “The flint elevations to the courtyard are simply breath-taking… This is an immensely accomplished work, representing a pinnacle of collective achievement by an inspirational and driven client, a sophisticated and intelligent architect and a fastidious builder. The union has created a building of immense quality which, like its immediate neighbours, will endure and reward for centuries.”
Built to meet the growing demand for boarding at Brighton College, New House opened to pupils in September, and was opened by Sir John Chilcot. In May it won a RIBA regional award, the third of Brighton College’s new buildings to do so in as many years, the Simon Smith and Skidelsky buildings having received the accolade in the institute’s 2012 awards. The College was this year named RIBA Regional Client of the Year for a second time - a very rare privilege.
