The University of Exeter Penryn Campus Excellence Awards ceremony took place on Thursday 3 April, to celebrate the achievements of young people in Cornwall
The awards evening at the Penryn Campus recognised Excellence amongst students from the South Shore Education Partnership which consists of Falmouth School, Helston Community College, Mullion School and Penryn College.
Over 80 awards were presented to students from across the southwest peninsular of Cornwall, rewarding them for Academic Excellence, Artistic Excellence, Sporting Excellence and Positive Contribution to their school or community. The students are recognised for their achievements at various stages of their educational journey.
Several hundred parents, teachers, school representatives, and VIPs including the Deputy Mayor of Penryn Cllr Gill Grant and the Mayor of Falmouth Cllr Geoffrey Evans joined by senior members of University staff to celebrate the hard won achievements of the young people in the county.
Marie Hunter, Head Teacher of Penryn College said: “The Excellence Awards ceremony was truly inspiring for award winners, parents and other adults who attended. The combination of the actual award ceremony, five amazing performances from the schools and an engaging and highly relevant speech given by Dr Catriona Pennell from the university worked perfectly to create not only a highly enjoyable evening, but an event which also proved to further raise the aspirations of the youngsters involved. Congratulations to those who were involved in planning the event at the University of Exeter and, of course, to the award winners and their parents. A wonderful evening!”
Professor Mark Goodwin, Deputy Vice Chancellor who hosted the event said: “The University of Exeter is committed to working with students from Cornwall in raising aspirations and supporting progression. ‘It is my sincere hope that the awards inspire young people, not only to follow a path to higher education, but to attend some of the very best universities in the country’.
He added “it is an honour to present and meet so many of the county’s wonderful students this evening. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and value their contributions to school and community life.”
