Sophie Hawkins, a graduating Menswear designer from Falmouth College of Art has a unique eco-innovative approach to her collection, recently exhibited at Graduate Fashion Week in London
Graduating Menswear designer, Sophie Hawkins, has a unique eco-innovative approach to her collection. Encapsulating her love for the outdoors, sports and exploring other cultures, this menswear collection demonstrates ethical, ergonomic clothing with energetic style. Her collection for her own 'Shiny Jacket Company' demonstrates Builder's functional clothing, alternatively using only re-claimed fabrics in bold, naturally dyed colours.
Sophie Hawkins of Glastonbury and former student of Strode College presented her collection as part of the annual University College Falmouth Fashion Show 2011 which took leaders in the Creative Industries by storm. 30 budding future designers hit the global market with an exceptional display of contemporary designs in front of a target audience made up of the Sports and leisurewear industry from Cornwall, London and Europe along with family and friends.
Professor Anne Carlisle, Rector & CEO University College Falmouth opened the show and thanked guests for their support as UCF grows. Anne passionately explained how UCF prepares young graduates from the Fashion Design BA(Hons) and Performance Sportswear Design BA(Hons) for all sorts of professional roles within the Creative Industries.
She said, “A very special thank you goes to our show sponsors; Relays, Legacy Trust UK, First Great Western, The Co-Operative Membership , SGB (Sporting Goods Business), Castlerooms, Truro College, Penwith College, Pure Blue, The Bottle Bank, Yamamoto, Scimitar without whom the show would not be possible.” She added, “This flag-ship annual event is just the start of the Falmouth Summer Festivals running between, 17th and 24th June, you are invited to join us in celebrating the wonderful work produced by all our students from all our degree courses throughout this month.”
Jane Gottelier, Programme Leader commented. “Students push the boundaries using the very latest in fabrics, experimental construction methods such as; laser-cutting, ultrasonic welding, tape seaming, digital printing, fabric bonding, intricate hand-crafted bead work and LCD lighting. An array of contemporary collections inspired by the future, nature, Cornwall, work-wear, functionality and sheer indulgence were just some of the highlights of the show.”
