When dressing for the races, it’s best to think as if you were attending a wedding.  The colour of your suit is a case of personal preference - many will pair a cream suit with a linen shirt, others opt for traditional black. My suit would be quite modern, my shoes patent lace-ups and I’d jazz things up with something braver and bolder shirt-wise. After all a day at the races is all about fun.Tony Murray, general manager at Harveys of Halifax

Dress code for men

Shirt and tie are a must for gentlemen in the grandstand area, preferably with a suit or jacket. Sports attire, jeans and shorts are strictly forbidden.

Cravats really stand out as the wrong choice at Royal Ascot. Wear a tightly knotted tie instead.

Show at least half an inch of shirt cuff below the coat sleeve as it balances out the crispness of the shirt at the neckline and contrasts with the dark morning suit for a fabulously smart combination.

When doing up the buttons on your waistcoat, remember to always leave the bottom button undone. Stockists
