The side ponytail

1. Shampoo hair and use a light conditioner for shine and volume.

2. Dry hair with root volume and a smoothing styling product such as Schwarzkopf Miracle Cream.

3. Set the hair on big rollers.

4. With a soft brush, brush the waves out and place a diagonal parting, at the same time wrap the fringe to the side. Use a band and tie into a loose pony on the side.

5. To finish add spray shine and back brush out the curls and pony slightly.

Rae Palmer

Rae says, “Hot hair colours for winter will be cinnamon blondes, rich terracotta, rustic redheads and deep rich chestnuts. It’s all going to be spicy! Glossy hair is the key for this season and is achieved by using deep penetrating masques on the hair as well as a top coat glaze colour, this is a semi permanent colour that just gives the hair a superb shine. Styling products such as serums, oils and spray shines are great too. A good tip is to spritz shine spray onto a big blusher brush and dust it onto the hair, this will give a light shine without being too wet or greasy. For fabulous curls use the Babyliss extra small conical wands for on trend corkscrew and spiral curls, or the cool new Babyliss Beach Wave tongs. Be sure to use a protective spray before styling to stop the hair becoming dry. Keep curls glossy and healthy looking with oils before and after styling.”

The beehive

1. Give your hair some body by setting in heated rollers or curling the hair using tongs.

2. Start to backcomb from the roots first, working in sections to make it easier.

3. Spray a little light hairspray when the hair feels ready to sculpt to help it along the way.

4. If you are putting all the hair up then you first need to smooth the hair across the back of the head and then place a line of interlocking grips on one side.

5. Fold the remaining hair back over the grips, tucking it in as you go to create a pleat at the back of the head, securing with hair pins as you go.

6. For half up/half down hairdos, neatly section off the top and sides of the hair and work these sections as before into the desired shape and grip securely on the crown of the head as neatly as possible. The longer flowing locks enjoy a bit of a flick out, so get those curling tongs out again to finish the ends for a real retro feel.

Vintage Hair Lounge

Kimber House, 118 High Street, Southampton, SO14 2AATelephone: 02380 337109 enquiries@vintagehairlounge.com

Owner Sharon Holloway says, “The hottest vintage look this party season is the sixties style beehive. You can go as big and as flamboyant as the late great Amy Winehouse, or try a classic Audrey Hepburn Breakfast at Tiffany’s stylish creation. Finish off with a generous blast of hairspray, I recommend Davines Glam Power Spray (12.99). It does exactly what it says and gives a great finish for a hairstyle that will last not just for the evening but the next day as well! Retro colour trends are all about embracing your inner diva, so reds, coppers and burgundy shades will guarantee you’ll get noticed. The retro “flash” is also back - a striking contrasted colour or blonde section of the hair that accentuates any dressed vintage hairstyle with fifties or sixties influences.”

The blow dry

1. It is crucial that before you even begin styling, you invest some time and money on finding the right products and tools for your hair. Consider heat protection, minimise damage, look after and love your hair. Selecting the right shampoo, conditioner and styling products makes up two thirds of building your over-all style.

2. Ensure you are using a decent, powerful hair-dryer, section clips, comb and a round hair brush.

3. Never start with very wet or saturated hair. Blast out the majority of the moisture before applying any styling product.

4. Apply and distribute your product as evenly as you can. Depending on what you are using, the application can vary between mid-lengths and ends or specifically focusing on the roots. Do not over-load your hair with product, remember you can add more but you cannot take it out without rewashing.

5. Comb through and gather your hair up like a ponytail. Starting at the bottom, comb down approximately 1 inch sections and clip the rest of the hair up with section clips to keep it out the way. Roll your brush under the section of hair at the root, apply the nozzle on top of the hair and pull both brush and nozzle through from root to tip, repeat until 100% dry. Working your way up from the bottom, continue releasing 1 inch sections of hair and repeating the process.

Lavant Rowe

5 Lavant Street, Petersfield, GU32 3EL01730 266661www.lavantrowe.com

Owners Chris Scott and Stephen Harsthorne say, “When working with a big blow dry a fringe can add definition to the face. However, the decision to have a fringe should be as important as choosing your wedding dress or even your man and should not be taken lightly! Dont just follow the trend, not everyone suits a fringe and it could potentially take a long time to grow out. We consider everything from face shape, facial features and skin tone to the individuals overall style. If you are petite and looking to create a stronger look, a structured short cut with a fringe is likely to suit. Think Danni Minogue. While soft waves and sweeping fringes add real feminine glam to longer more classic styles.”
