Autumn and winter are the most exciting seasons for makeup as well as fashion. This season it’s all about texture: glossy cheeks, matte lips and metallic eyes to name but a few of the key trends...
Eastern inspired metallics
Popular at Donna Karan, Bibhu Mohapatra and Nicole Miller shows. This is an intensified eye makeup using jewel colours with accents of gold or silver (see model image by Armani), covering the entire eye area up to the brow. Married with close-to natural finish for the rest of the face, including the lips and the cheeks.
Invest in Dior’s shadow palette called Trafalgar and make it more commercial by using the darker shades on the lids and at the outer edge of the eye and use the palest tone under the brow. Urban Decay and Kiko have bright, metallic, longwearing liners which can really make the colour of your eyes pop by using contrasting colours i.e. bright green liner looks fantastic with blue eyes.
Liquid liner effect always proves popular in the autumn/winter months, but the “flicks” that were seen at shows like Jean Paul Gaultier, exaggerated and elongated creating a feline effect. The key to creating this look is to use a quick dry longwearing product. If you like to use a gel pot then Bobbi Brown and Illamasqua have the best and in the blackest of blacks. Prefer a pen style? Then Urban Decay’s 24/7 liner in Perversion is perfect for you. Benefit have recently launched They’re Real Push Up liner.
A pen style liner that has a tapered rubber style tip that delivers a gel style formula which, due to the slanted angle of the tip helps the wearer to control and place the product more efficiently. But make sure that you twist and deliver the first application onto the back of your hand to help regulate the delivery of the product. This liner is also good for creating a double line effect which is quite popular this season.

A fresh complexion and groomed brows teamed up with deep rich lips were spotted at Marchesa and Marc by Marc Jacobs. So anything goes from sheer berry to rich clarets. If you’ve never worn a deep lip colour before, the best place to start would be with Clinique’s Chubby Sticks. They have shades of grape and plum which are wearable and won’t look as if you’ve been dug up! For the more adventurous try Illamasqua Glamore lipstick in Vampette, a lush Aubergine which can be intensified using a suitable liner.
It’s also very important to use a lip base to prep and smooth the lips prior to application. Benefit, Guerlain and Illamasqua all do good ones. Also to maintain a healthy smooth lip, avoid any balms with petroleum in them as these will have the opposite effect, so go for Sisley Nutritive lipbalm or Dr Haushka lipbalm to ensure a pretty pout.
