Manu Bhardwaj, founder of Durham Rose, a bespoke jewellery design company talks to WEL about the love for his family, creating innovative, sentimental rings for his clients and his fear of goat’s cheese!
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Manu Bhardwaj, founder of Durham Rose, a bespoke jewellery design company in Theydon Bois.
Where do you live?
I live in Theydon Bois.
What do you love about your job?
I love being a part of people’s journeys. Helping clients to design a sentimental and symbolic ring that they or their loved ones will see every day and remember forever - it’s a really personal and fun process. It is such a privilege to be a part of such significant events in people’s lives.

What is the best part of your job?
Having the freedom to push boundaries and create a unique piece of jewellery that has never been made before. However, the best element is when my client comes to collect their rings and you get to see their priceless reaction.
What is the worst part of your job?
Knowing that despite all efforts, unfortunately there will always be a few design ideas from clients that we simply cannot create - it’s frustrating but the laws of physics have their limits sometimes.
What is the secret of your success?
Loving and believing in what we do.
What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?
It has to be proposing to my wife with a ring that I designed myself.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Expanding the business on a global scale - currently around 30% of our business is international so it would be great to see us grow across other continents too.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Sleep and eat cake! I also love the downtime and being with my wife and children.
What would your alternative career be?
Lego technic designer.
When were you the happiest?
Luckily there are a lot of times to choose from but I’d have to say seeing my son’s face when his little sister was born was a particularly special moment.
What is your greatest fear?
Missing a client’s deadline and I also fear goat’s cheese as I’m highly allergic!
What is your next ambition for 2016?
To open a funky new design studio.
Do you have any summer holidays planned?
Bizarrely, glamping at Leeds Castle with the family. My son can’t wait!
Where do you go for a guy’s night out?
20 metres from my back door! We built a fire pit and BBQ area where there have been many nights chopping wood, eating meat and playing with fire.
What’s your drink of choice after a hard day?
Depends how hard the day has been! I’m partial to a nice glass of red wine although now the sun is starting to shine I fancy myself as a bit of a mixologist.
What is top on your bucket list?
To take my children skiing now that they’re old enough to go.
Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Jamiroquai music and ‘Cake Day Friday’ (cake at 11am every Friday in the office).
