Somerset hairdresser Jamie Stevens, the official hairdresser for The X Factor, shares his tips on how to style your hair for the Christmas season...

Beehives are back for 2011! Get yourself a piece of wadding about 10 cm long and 3 cm wide near to your own hair colour. Take a section from ear to ear. Leave a piece at the front out (or your fringe if you have one.)Backcomb your hair from root to tip and gently smooth the front-facing hair with a brush. Roll the wadding from the tip of the hair down, forming an arch shape. Randomly place pins in to secure with the hair at the back. You can tie into a side ponytail and leave straight, curl, or you can pull all the hair to one side and fold over your hand to make a French pleat.

For a sexy updo, try this high ponytail. You can achieve an instant facelift by sweeping your hair into a super-sleek high ponytail. By making skin tighter, this style lifts sagging around the eyes and draws the skin tightly over the cheekbones.

Party hair doesn’t have to mean updos – short hair is hot! It’s all about short, androgynous layers that are full of texture and movement. The pixie crop is really big this season. Bring it up to date by adding short layers. Going for the crop is a bold move, but if you’re too afraid to go all the way this season then why not try the lob, or the long shoulder-length bob. I love the new long bob because it’s so versatile and can be styled up to suit most face shapes.

& 5 Don’t be afraid to be bold with colour. Blondes are everywhere this winter. Warmer tones, like caramel and honey, are really big this season. Make sure colour complements your skin colouring. Consultations are really important when going for a colour change. Red hair will continue to be popular right into winter. Natural shades like copper and terracotta will be bang on trend.
