It’s finally here! And, if the hype is to be believed, the all new Porsche Boxster is an impressive car indeed. Ade Holder, previews the latest in the line of the fashionable motor, with a full review to follow in September’s Surrey Life magazine

I think it is fair to say the previous incarnation of the Boxster was a divisive car; and it was not as simple as like or don’t like.

Nobody who knows cars would ever suggest the first Boxster was not a driver’s car, but the car’s push me/pull me looks often left people unsure or even down right unhappy.

This was sometimes compounded by the new customers Porsche seemed to have acquired with the car.

Gone was the purist driver and over indulgent yuppie, along came fashionable city folk, wealthy wives and the string back glove wearing mid-life crisis set.

All of these new people were actually getting a cracking car at a cracking price but for some people it did not wash.

I have it on very good authority that Top Gear’s James May has even suggested his Boxster was the best car he ever bought; high praise indeed!

The Boxster and the Boxster S were both great cars but you can’t force people to like something.

With all that said, I was very exited when I spoke to the lovely folk at Porsche Guildford and found out they will be sending Surrey Life a brand new Boxster.

This car has been is hailed as the bench mark roadster and by all accounts that is not far wrong.

Times they are a changin'The new Boxster is lighter, more efficient, more agile, and maybe crucially, better looking. I don’t just mean it has been altered slightly, Porsche have redefined the Boxster.

It looks bigger and meaner despite being trimmer, it seems to carry traits from the Carrera GT and the timeless 911 and on paper it is about to change the open top driving world forever.

The new Boxster is still powered by a flat 6, but the engine is new and offers an extra 10 horse power without being any bigger. In fact, the engine is smaller.

The 2.7 litre engine pushes out and impressive 265bhp and 0-60 in just 5.7 seconds. The front and rear overhangs are shorter and the window pushed forward, offering a suggestion of the new driving experience on offer.

Not only does this car offer lots of driving potential but it seems realistic to run too; the Boxster offers a very frugal 36.7mpg.

I think you would find it quite hard to seek another 2.7 litre engine, with a sub six second 0-60, that brings that kind of mileage.

Of course, the Boxster will offer all the usual luxuries you would expect from this classic marquee, along with a fully automatic roof for hassle free top down fun. Costing from 37,589 it may be a little more than the old Boxster but on paper at least, it is worth every penny.

If you do find yourself in the market for this particular piece of potential motoring history, once you purchase your car you will even be invited to the Porsche centre at Silverstone to learn how to use your new pride and joy.

Personally, I can’t wait to take it for a spin! Read the results in September’s Surrey Life magazine.
