How to lose weight: why an individualised approach may help you

When it comes to weight loss, it is important to find the right solution for you as an individual.
Dr Kim Prescott, who practices medical weight loss and offers the National Weight Loss Programme from a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered clinic, discusses when to seek professional help and shares some weight loss tips.
Q: When do people typically seek medical help for weight loss?
When they feel they have exhausted all options. They might be asking themselves: “Why is my weight not going down?” Even though they have been doing the right things and perhaps had some success losing weight on their legs, face, breasts, they might be finding they cannot lose it from their abdomen. So, they go to a specialist for an individualised programme that might work for them. It is then about assessing any underlying psychological disorders, such as overeating because of childhood trauma, or discovering any medical reasons. The professional needs to ascertain what it is about you that is problematic about losing weight.
Q: Why can’t I lose weight with diet and exercise?
You might not be losing weight because you have an underlying medical condition, such as a hormone imbalance or insulin resistance. You might have polycystic ovary syndrome or a vitamin B deficiency; lack of sleep and stress can also be associated with weight gain. Having abdominal weight in itself can actually prevent you from losing weight.

We start by looking at your overall history and what has and has not worked in the past. We also consider your family history and possibly nutrigenomic testing, assessing the individual genetics associated with your nutritional needs. Very often we conduct medical tests and where appropriate we might prescribe medication for a condition and possibly licensed weight loss medication. Then we put together a structured individual eating programme. But it is also about considering how you keep the weight off once you have lost it. Programmes aimed at long term weight loss will also aim to improve overall health in order to help prevent chronic diseases later in life: dementia, cardiac disease and cancer are all linked to excess abdominal weight.
Q: Can I lose weight fast?
It is entirely possible to achieve weight loss fast – there are times when you need to lose weight quickly, such as before an operation or for a medical reason. Rapid weight loss can be achieved but has to be done with the long term in mind as it can lead to rapid weight regain. We can use processes like calorie cycling, where you move between periods of lower and higher calories.
