With RUSH celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, what do you think has been the secret of the brand’s success?

Passion, hard work, dedication and determination. We never believed that 20 years down the line we would have over 60 salons. Passion in business is so important – it spurs you on and if you love what you do you are more likely to succeed. Our vision was to create stunningly beautiful yet wearable hairstyles that were individual to every customer. From the first salon in 1994 till date, the same vision and passion has kept us focussed and helped us succeed.

You’ve certainly won lots of awards over the years; any particular highlights?

We have been very fortunate to win many awards over the years for both our creative work and business skills. Several stand out for different reasons – winning Artistic Team of the Year twice at the British Hairdressing Awards was an incredible feeling as it was a team award. When we achieved the Sunday Times Best Place to Work ranking – the whole company celebrated and this was a fantastic testimony to our team from head office to the salons. We also won Franchise Company of the Year at the Sapphires which really validated the route we were taking in business was the right one.

We were interested to hear that your first salon opened in Wimbledon; just on the edge of the Surrey Life patch. Tell us about that…

Our Wimbledon salon gave us a great start. In the beginning there was only Andy and myself. We were then joined by an assistant. We did everything in the salon ourselves and all of a sudden it took off – we realised then that we were on the right track and expanded into a second salon.

You now have over 60 salons across the south-east; that’s quite an achievement in 20 years... give us some highlights?

There have been many memorable moments in these 20 years that have just flown by. We are really proud of what we’ve achieved but have never take anything for granted. If I had to name a few they would be:

• Artistic team that we set up in 1999 – we have 6 of the industry’s top stylists in our team and they have won an outstanding 13 industry awards with a growing list of celebrity clientele.

• Setting up the Advanced Academy in 2008 so we can provide regular training and nurture the talent of our salon teams and keep their skills at cutting edge.

• Opening the House of Rush at London Piccadilly in 2012. An inspirational salon offering decadent hair and beauty services to both men and women.

• And of course every time we have won an award (and there’s been 52 of them to date!).

• To be recognised and rewarded by the industry, both for individual stylists and our teams, has been a phenomenal experience.

How many salons do you have in Surrey?

We have nine salons across the area. You can find us at Sutton, Kingston, Staines upon Thames, Surbiton, Reigate, Camberley, Redhill, Richmond and Epsom.

And now your latest salon is opening in Surbiton; tell us more about that…

The salon boasts Rush’s chic black glossy features and an amazingly relaxing wash area, where you can escape into a tranquil salon experience. The talented salon team will only be using a range of top quality salon professional hair products such as Kérastase, L’Oréal Professional and ghd to create gorgeous hair.

It was also interesting to hear that it’s being run by a long-term customer who ended up becoming a franchisee?

Yes, it was great when Caitlin approached us. She has been one of our customers for many years and would always describe each visit as a fabulous experience. For a long time Caitlin wanted to have her own business and Rush seemed to be the perfect match as she loved the brand and wanted to help spread the Rush experience.

Are you looking for more franchisees, and if so, what sort of qualities do they need to have?

We have exciting high profile locations in the pipeline and welcome interest from anyone interested in joining our successful network of salons. We want someone with strong people skills, a passion for our industry and good business acumen. They don’t need to have hairdressing experience and we will support them with everything from finding a location, funding of the investment, build of store, recruitment and training of staff through to marketing and day to day management of the salon.

If any of our readers are interested in finding out more, what should they do?

RUSH is also known for its celebrity clientele – any well-known names who frequent the Surrey branches?

We prefer to keep that confidential – that’s why they like to visit us!

We were interested to see that you also offer beauty treatments these days too…

We have been offering beauty treatments since 2003 when we opened our first beauty salon in Croydon. This was followed by Sutton Beauty in 2009 and Windsor in 2010. We also offer beauty treatments in a very indulgent style at the House of Rush in London Picadilly. The products and techniques used in our treatments are second to none and will leave you pampered and looking fabulous from head to toe.

You’re also involved with several charities; tell us about that…

We’re involved in Hairaising for Great Ormond Street and have been since 2008. It’s a really important charity and each year we donate via events we hold. We are very proud to have raised over £100,000 to date.

What are the hot hair trends for this summer?

There’s nothing better than well-cut hair. It doesn’t matter if your hair is long or short, well-cut and coloured hair is in fashion at all times. With longer hair a ponytail or braid is a good way to keep cool and look on trend. For shorter hair use product to create texture.

And, finally, what would be your single best tip for getting beautiful hair?

Listen to your hairdresser – they are the experts. If you want beautiful hair keep it in shape, use good products and make sure your cut suits you and your lifestyle. Having great hair gives a woman great confidence.
