Prostate trouble affects many men. Typical symptoms of prostate enlargement are a poor urinary flow, going all too often and having to get up at the night to urinate. As both benign prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are common conditions it understandable that men may become anxious if they start to suffer bladder symptoms.

Most commonly these symptoms are unrelated to cancer and are due to non cancerous enlargement of the prostate; however it is important to provide reassurance by ruling out prostate cancer at an early stage.

Men can usually be helped with very simple measures “Carefully listening to the patient’s story combined with a detailed evaluation allows us to tailor treatments to individual needs and preferences” explains Mr James Moore, Consultant Urologist at the Sussex Bladder Clinic. “Lifestyle advice and medication are often all that are required. If this doesn’t provide relief then surgery can be considered - men shouldn’t put up with bothersome symptoms that interfere with their lives when there are safe and highly effective treatments available”. Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a minimally invasive procedure whereby the centre of the prostate gland is removed allowing the urine to flow freely and bladder function to return to normal.

Mr Moore uses Plasmakinetic Surgery to remove the obstructing prostate tissue – “These new technological developments have made prostate surgery safer and most men can be home the day after surgery and make a rapid recovery to normal activities”. Mr Moore performs over eighty prostate operations every year and the procedure is approved by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence.
