Pam Bescoby runs successful acupuncture clinics in Hale and Daresbury. Here she tells us a little about her business and why she has seen great success.
How I got started
I worked both as a model and in hotel management, but decided to re-train and do something I felt passionate about once my two sons were ready to fly the nest. I studied at the Northern College of Acupuncture in York. Most people are surprised when they realise the amount of study needed to become a traditional Acupuncturist; it involves a three year degree course, studying both Chinese and Western medicine. The Chinese medicine incorporates theory, tongue and pulse diagnosis, diet and lifestyle, location of points, needling skills, cupping, moxabustion, massage and also lots of clinic hours!
Why have Acupuncture?
It’s a great way to maintain your health and fitness. In this era of ‘mindfulness’ people in general are looking at prevention rather than cure. It’s a perfect natural way to balance out the stress we place upon our bodies both physically and mentally. However in reality most people seek me out as a last resort – and I’m never offended!
What can Acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture can help with many ailments: migraine, anxiety, hayfever and particularly, of course, back pain and other musculoskeletal problems. A large part of my work is seeing people experiencing fertility issues or going through a cycle of IVF. Acupuncture is becoming increasingly recognized as a invaluable support in this area.

I see people from all over the North West. I’ve been practicing for over 10 years and now most of my clients come via word of mouth, with referrals too from GPs and Consultants. I also work with Mr Luciano Nardo, a well renowned fertility Consultant, and I am at the moment involved in establishing an Acupuncture practice at his new fertility clinic, The Centre for Reproductive Health, at Daresbury.
I also deal with sports injuries including premier league footballers who are increasingly looking at alternative ways of improving their fitness and extending their careers, so my days are very varied.
My business ethos
I treat everyone with respect and discretion. The hour that they give me needs to be relaxing, enjoyable and effective.
When I’m not working
I revert to my first career where I learnt to cook. My ideal day is walking my dogs and coming back to cook for family and friends.
