Paul Middleton didn’t set out to build a career in dentistry, but his many satisfied patients are very pleased his fire service dream never came to be.
What we do
Smiles Designed is a cosmetic dental practice. We provide all aspects of cosmetic dentistry from dental implants to teeth whitening. We have a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and removable prosthodontics (dentures).
How did you get started in dentistry?
At 16 I wanted to be a fireman! Hoping to achieve this aim I went to a local careers fair, where it turned out I needed to be 18 to train as a fireman, so they suggested I do a YTS for 2 years. The stall next door was offering a YTS in dental technology - and I signed up! However, whilst delivering the dentures I made to local dentists, I decided that I’d like to take my career further. So along with studying for my BTEC NAT Dip in dental technology and working full time at the dental lab, I went to night school to do A-levels. I got a place at Sheffield University, qualified in 1998 and bought my own practice in January 2004.
Have you any special interest within the field?
I enjoy creating life-like dentures. People of all ages need dentures for a variety of reasons, whether due to a sporting accident or gradual tooth loss. There are few things more rewarding than seeing someone smile after years of not daring to.

Are from a wide demographic, some are regular patients whilst others come for a one-off specific treatment. Our patients come from all over Cheshire but we also have patients who travel from Wales, France and Switzerland! Being only five minutes from the airport and the M56 makes us very accessible!
What makes Smiles Designed special?
We are a small practice and I am the only practitioner, so there is a professional but very relaxed air about the practice. I have a great team of nurses and hygienists who help to ensure that the patients feel at ease. Any treatment plans are discussed thoroughly, weighing up all options. No treatment is carried out until a patient is 100% happy.
My business ethos
At Smiles Designed we don’t do ‘Special Offers’ because we refuse to cut corners. We believe in the old adage ‘You get what you pay for’, and therefore we pay top prices for the best materials and laboratory work. This ensures our patients leave the practice happy with their new smiles.
When I’m not working
I’m sure I’m expected to say that I’m travelling the world, cycling coast to coast, or getting my pilot’s license! However, the truth is, I’m usually out with my children supporting one of their sporting or social events. And that’s exactly where I want to be!
