Confused about what to wear this season? Here is my guide to the best of the trends for A/W11 to help you navigate your way

SixtiesNot everyone is going to be able to rock the 1960’s-style shift that has made a return. Mostly high-necked and short, give this trend a miss unless you are small busted and have legs like a gazelle.

If the 1960’s is your ‘thang’, you can still work the trend by teaming a short shift with leggings and boots.

Androgyny The androgynous look has become more ‘girl friendly’ this season, with designers understanding that women need and prefer a softer edge.

Mix a masculine item like a tux with a feminine one like a maxi-dress, or do the masculine tux and cigarette pants but with a ruffled blouse or statement jewellery.

Jewel colours Happily for all of us, the ‘colour pop’ trend is staying put. Jewel colours reign supreme: think emerald, ruby, cobalt blue, burnt orange and add to chocolate, navy and black separates.

Rich, luxe fabrics like satin, lace and velvet, together with sequins and metallics for shimmer and sparkle all make a welcome appearance this season.

I could whoop with joy as this is me, me, me! Wear with knitwear if you want to pare down the look but don’t ever be frightened to indulge in some daytime sparkle, whatever your age!

Cover those knees The hemline has lowered and this season it is definitely mid-calf. Some fashion pundits link this trend to the recession, saying that in times of hardship our hemlines go down. Well in that case, we will soon be wearing them dragging on the floor!

If you find midi difficult to wear because of your leg shape, keep to knee skimming or maxi, but it could be that you are not looking at the right shape skirt for your shape.

Fetish I know, you don’t want to look like you’re wearing a bondage outfit while trotting around Waitrose, but this season’s ‘fetish with fetish’ means that there will be a lot of leather detailing around. My only dabble into this trend may be a stylish leather pencil skirt, definitely below the knee.

Snakeskin prints We will see snakeskin prints all around this winter. Even the most conservative dressers among us can enjoy this trend by adding a snakeskin handbag (faux or vintage), some shoes or some of the fabulous printed scarves, blouses and dresses that are currently available. Like its leopard-print cousin, this trend doesn’t go away for long, so invest in something for keeps.

NEXT MONTH: The worse fashion faux pas – or what I hope I don’t get for Christmas ...
