The folk are friendly
Yorkshire is a friendly and honest place, there are not many towns you would find an honesty box these days. I like to think us folk make people feel welcome in our county, making sure they have a great time and feel at home. This picture was taken at a little town called Masham.
The scenery is something to be proud of The scenery in Yorkshire is second to none in the UK. Rolling fields, dramatic valleys and quaint villages, Yorkshire has it all, no wonder we have a world renowned National Parks and award winning Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Who could be more proud of that?
We are steeped in history Yorkshire has a proud history that is long and diverse. From the conquests of the Romans to the invasion of the Vikings and fronting the Industrial Revolution, we have history to fit every taste. This has made us what we are today and there are so many attractions to visit to celebrate this proud history.
It is a happy place to live Home to Harrogate, voted the happiest place to live in the UK, how could you not want to experience a place that will add smile to your face, it certainly does for me. Picturesque countryside and a friendly population, I am proud that we have gained this reputation and hope it continues for generations to come.
Acclaimed architecture Why would I be proud of our county’s architecture? From the likes of Fountains Abbey being a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, to the dramatic Gothic style of York Minster, there is a great design around every corner. We’ve been home to great architects such as John Carr, designer of Harewood House and Yorkshire Bridge.
The food & drink, dare I say more? You cannot beat the food and drink in Yorkshire. The infamous Yorkshire pudding will always be why we are remembered, with the finishing touch of one of our legendary Yorkshire ales. Yorkshire embraces the tradition and recipes past down by generations and this makes dining in the county a particular treat. Why not visit Masham? The proud rural town with not one, but two world famous breweries.
We go for Gold Not only do we try to outshine other counties through our fabulous food, views and buildings; we also go for gold in sports and have some great athlete’s. From the London 2012 Olympics we are proud to call the likes of the Brownlee Brothers, Lizzie Armitstead and Nicola Adams our own (it must be the fresh Yorkshire air). The people of Yorkshire made me proud during the Grand Depart stage of the Tour de France, where the population came out in force to show the world what we can do.
I hope you are all as proud of Yorkshire as I am on this year’s Yorkshire Day.
