The celebrity doctor, writer and full-time GP shares what he loves about Yorkshire

Something in Yorkshire that makes you smile

It has to be the people. I have friends visit from all around the country and when we go out for runs or walks they are genuinely surprised when Yorkshire folk say “hello” to us as we pass them. They always ask if I know them, to which the answer is “No, they’re just friendly Yorkshire folk.”

A place you love to eat

My absolute favourite restaurant is Prashad in Drighlington. I have grown up on Indian food and often turn my nose up at Indian restaurants as it is hard to beat Mama Khan’s home cooked delights but the food there is simply divine, it is all about the flavour rather than the spice.

To take friends

Harlow Carr in Harrogate. It has everything: a Betty’s café for a gorgeous lunch, then a walk around the RHS gardens with plenty of things to do for the kids and then the perfect finish: a lovely little shop that sells books and plants, two of my favourite things!

A childhood memory

Packing up the car and going to Filey every time we had a sunny weekend. My mum insisted we get fish and chips and eat them whilst sat on a blanket on the beach and then she used to wash the ketchup off our hands in the sea!

A cultural go-to

The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds. It is an absolute gem, the art and sculptures there really do resonate with me. As a man of science and medicine, it is a lovely break from the norm to immerse myself in art and it is especially handy as it is on my doorstep!

Inspiration outdoors

Bempton Cliffs: I am a wildlife and conservation enthusiast and often work with the RSPB and Wildlife Trusts. Seeing the rich diversity of seabirds there is simply breath taking, nothing beats the joy of watching the puffins return to the cliffs with beakfulls of fish! It can get a bit smelly, but it is worth it!

A place for indulgence

La Bottega Milanese on the Headrow in Leeds. It does the best Italian pastries accompanied by gorgeous coffee. I often stop there on my way to work and buy pastries for the staff at the surgery – we are all big fans.

A Yorkshire view that inspires

It has got to be Malham Cove – I am lucky enough to have seen the peregrine falcons that live there , but even if you don’t see them there a beautiful swifts darting around throughout spring and summer and the views from the top are stunning.

I’m never happier than when

I am watching the Red Kites soar above my garden. I am lucky enough to live by Harewood House where they have a successful red kite breeding programme. We get lots of them gliding by every day in search of a meal and it is wonderful to see such big birds of prey whilst looking out of your kitchen window.
