Christleton is a pretty near perfect village. Says who? The judges of the 2011 Best Kept Village award
Proud residents of Christleton stepped forward at the 55th Community Pride competition to collect another accolade for their pretty village.
Their triumph was announced at Ellesmere Port Civic Hall in front of civic leaders, parish councillors and competition judges from all around the county.The audience heard Christleton praised as being particularly well cared for and attractive to all who visit it. Locals received a painting by Gordon Wilkinson, sponsored by Cheshire Life.
The competition demonstrates how much voluntary work is undertaken to keep Cheshire a beautiful and vibrant county. It encourages villages to improve every aspect of village life which is under threat in many different ways.Edward Brady of sponsors Essar Oil UK, presented a plaque and cheque.
He stressed the competition is a testament to the vitality of the event and our communities. He also said it was impressive how much work was done by locals to make villages and towns more attractive places to live in.The Cheshire Community Spirit Award was presented to joint winners Audlem and Rushton.
Runner-up was Malpas and highly commended were Ashton Hayes , Willaston in Wirral and Willaston, (Nantwich). These villages have busy communities which promote the spirit of the area.Weaverham won the Community Safety Award, with Antrobus as runner-up. This is sponsored by Cheshire Constabulary and the Assistant Chief Constable of Cheshire, Mrs Janet McCormack, presented a plaque and a cheque for �250 to the winner.
The Young Persons’ Good Citizen Award is new this year. Christine Wallace was the 12-16 years winner, and Henry Garside is the Young Persons’ Citizen Award winner.John Hulme was the speaker for the evening. He was the instigator of the Best Kept Station Competition and spoke enthusiastically about the waterways and railways of Cheshire.
A new award called Little Gem, has been created to support volunteers who all look after their environment. Thirty-five certificates were awarded.
The Best Village Website was won by Congleton with joint runners-up Audlem and Upton by Chester. Kelsall was highly commended.The Best Community Newsletter was won by joint winners Mottram St Andrew and Willaston(Nantwich).
Joint runners-up were High Legh and Rixton with Glazebrook. Highly commended were Frodsham, Styal, Rainow and Wistaston.The Judges’ Photographic Award was won by Ted Graham of Chester.
