Christmas Jazz at the Cathedral
A concert in Exeter Cathedral with Jacqueline Dankworth and Andy Williamson's Big Buzzard Boogey Band
Now this is something special for Christmastime - a concert not to be missed by jazz lovers and those looking for something different and exciting. Jacqui Dankworth is widely regarded as one of the finest singers of her generation. Andy Williamson’s 16-piece Big Buzzard Boogey Band comprises the cream of the south west’s jazz musicians. Both will join with our own award-winning choir, Exeter Festival Chorus, who will once again show their versatility by getting into the jazz mood, lead as always by their Musical Director, Nigel Perrin. The concert’s first half will feature a variety of jazz arrangements for Christmas, including some audience participation so that everyone can take part. In the second half the company will present Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert. Although Ellington rarely expressed his association with the church in music, he was inspired to accept a commission for a series of concerts across the US. He wrote material for three concerts, and this presentation features ten of the best items drawn from all three. The music covers all moods, ending triumphantly with ‘Praise God and dance’.
