Tonbridge fitness instructor Jayne Nutley on fun ways to exercise and shed that post-Christmas flab, without spending a fortune

Tell us a bit about you

I’m a fitness instructor and massage therapist. I’ve lived in Tonbridge all my life, have been married for 19 years and have two sons aged 18 and 15. Fitness has been a part of my life since I was 16 and I trained to become an instructor in 1994 after being made redundant.

Do you compete as well as teach?

Ten years ago I took part in my first triathlon and I have been competing every year since. I am able to combine my teaching with my training as my spin classes really help with training for the bike session and I also swim once a week.

Your favourite classes to teach?

I enjoy all the classes I teach, from fitness yoga to Insanity. My favourites at the moment are Piloxing and Insanity. Piloxing is a new class on the timetable, a fusion of Pilates, boxing and dance which helps you burn 500 calories in an hour’s class.

Help – I’ve over-indulged at Christmas!

Looking at portion sizes and trying to reduce them is a good start while cutting back on calories during the week will help. Eating healthily and having small amounts of all the food groups is important. If you can combine this with exercise four to five times a week you will soon notice the difference. Finding exercises you enjoy is really important, whether it is walking, dancing or cycling, as you are more likely to stick with it.

I can’t motivate myself at the gym

Why not try some classes out and arrange to go with a friend, as you are more likely to attend regularly if you are going with someone you know. Try out some fun classes as well like Zumba or dancing.

Do I need to invest in special kit?

Exercising doesn’t have to be expensive. Just invest in a good pair of trainers and if you just start with walking or running about your local park or lake to get you outside, that doesn’t cost anything.

How many hours training shall I do?

Doing a bit of something every day that gets you out of breath is a good start, for example using the stairs rather than the lift or walking or cycling to work if that’s possible. Even these small changes can make a difference. Trying to go to the gym or classes straight after work also helps; 45 minutes is all you need to improve your fitness noticeably.

What motivates you to keep training?

The ‘feelgood factor’ after I’ve exercised, whether that’s in the morning, which sets me up for the day or in the evening when I’ve had a bad day and it gets rid of all the stress. Twenty years of teaching, loving my job and wanting others to have sense of accomplishment when they finish a class or a session in the gym then they come back for more the following week. That’s what keeps me motivated.

Which sports people do you admire?

I admire Victoria Pendleton, Jessica Ennis, Tonbridge’s very own Dame Kelly Holmes, and Tom Daley. All just ordinary people but with a massive drive and the discipline to be the best at what they do.

What do you have for breakfast?

Porridge every day with blueberries and raisins, I love it as it keeps me going all morning. I could actually live on it. Oh, and chocolate of course! n
