The Brooking Collection, CranleighThe only major national collection of its kind in the UK, The Brooking Collection of Architectural Detail is physically charting the evolution of British building details over the last 500 years. As of December 2011, storage of the collection’s 250,000 artefacts had to move from the University of Greenwich to a warehouse closer to the home of its Cranleigh-based founder Charles Brooking and it was necessary to auction other items, including the gates from old Wembley Stadium, to raise the money needed to sustain the majority. The Farmyard by Francis Barlow, Clandon ParkThe Farmyard is a painting at the National Trust’s Clandon Park, which has suffered considerable damage during its history and has been extensively, and poorly, over-painted. The piece requires 720 hours of work in the conservator’s studio. Another major cost element is building a scaffold raft to enable the painting to be taken down safely, prepared and rolled for transport to the studio – another 320 hours of work. All in all around 35,000 is required to carry out this work.Contact Caroline Sones, house manager at Clandon Park: 01483 222482 or e-mail caroline.sones@nationaltrust.org.uk

Hindhead Murder paintings, Haslemere MuseumIn 2009, Tim Winter, a local historian and volunteer at Haslemere Museum, purchased a series of five pictures of the 1786 murder of the unknown sailor at Hindhead. They were passed on to the museum and are badly in need of repair. While the cost of repairing The Hanging has been taken on by a charitable trust, the museum is seeking funding for the conservation of the other paintings, which are available to view at the museum by appointment.Contact Julia Tanner at Haslemere Museum, 78 High Street, Haslemere GU27 2LA: 01428 642112
