The owner of bespoke kitchen and bedroom designer Transform Interiors in Cheshunt gives an insight into his business ethos
How did you get started in business? I was employed as a trainee within a kitchen company during my early 20s. After moving from each department – construction, distribution, sales and marketing – I decided the way forward was to start my own business. In 1989 with the support of my wife and business partner Carol we took the chance and 26 years later we are still here.
What’s your motivation? It is very important to stay motivated when you are self-employed to sustain turnover. There is also a responsibility to employees as well as yourself. I look forward to each new project, using different design and planning skills each time, and enjoy the many varied tasks relating to running your own business.
What are the biggest challenges? The biggest challenge we have is the very high reputation for service that we have achieved over the last 26 years when the enquiry levels become much higher than normal at certain times of the year particularly Christmas and in the spring. Distribution can also be challenging when there are multiple deliveries on the same day.
What are the most valuable business lessons you’ve learnt? 1. Always show integrity. 2. Whatever the task in hand – planning drawing, ordering deliveries, distribution or fitting - check, check and check again! 3. Maintain a good relationship with your suppliers, as you really depend on them.
