The manager of the new Medway branch of Perrys Chartered Accountants on expansion, river views and the joys of carp fishing

Tell us a bit about you

I joined Perry’s straight from university and trained at several of the offices before settling into the role of manager in Snodland. Now, 17 years later, I’m living in Maidstone and am thrilled to be heading up the new Medway office, particularly as I have a great view of the river.

Tell us about the business

The Medway office opened last August and houses the staff previously located in Snodland. We now have much larger premises and I like the pressure of running a bigger branch. We serve clients from all around the Medway area and I enjoy being able to help their businesses. There’s nothing I don’t enjoy. I probably need to delegate more, but I like being so involved.

Any plans for future expansion?

It’s a very exciting time for the company. We already have seven offices, five in Kent and two in London, but are still looking to expand within the south east. I don’t know where we will go next but we’ll certainly be keeping to our small team office structure. It’s very popular with our staff and clients and allows us to offer a personal service backed by the enormous range of expertise we have across the firm.

What advice would you give someone thinking of entering accountancy?

You will either love it or hate it! Go in with an open mind and be prepared to get stuck into all areas of training. As in any job you will invariably find aspects you don’t enjoy but the training will give you a great, rounded experience.

Best piece of business advice?

Believe in yourself and the work that you provide.

What makes a good boss?

A person who values their team.

Your most prized possession?

My fishing gear! I love carp fishing. My dad was a keen fisherman and he got me into it. Every year I take a trip to France with some friends but, so far, that 40lb carp has eluded me.

Do you use social media?

Yes, I do and it makes it much easier to communicate and network but nothing beats face-to-face communication.

How is your work/life balance?

It’s crucial for me to maintain a good balance and, although I fish as often as I can get away, running keeps me sane. I’m currently training for the London Triathlon in August. The whole firm’s getting involved and I’m determined not to be at the back.

Where do you prefer to eat in Kent?

For business I’ll head to the Dockside as there’s an excellent variety of good restaurants and riverside pubs there, but if I’m out with friends and family, then it has to be my local curry house.

What did you have for breakfast?

Coffee, a banana and crumpets, although yesterday wasn’t quite so healthy – I had left-over pizza. n
