Describe your businesses?

Musical Instruments (Cheltenham) Ltd is a long established retailer of pianos and other musical instruments. We are situated near the centre of Cheltenham just off the main High Street.

Within the shop you will find a large selection of guitars, woodwind and brass, violins, ukeleles, banjos, etc plus a myriad of accessories such as strings, reeds, tuners, metronomes, music stands etc. There is also a large selection of printed music available.

Our piano department offers a vast selection from a modest ‘starter’ upright to a fully reconditioned Steinway grand. We are approved stockists for major makes including Bechstein, Bluthner, Yamaha, Dale Forty, Kemble etc. We also stock the latest Yamaha keyboards, digital pianos and Clavinovas. Because a large part of the business is to do with pianos we also market ourselves as Cheltenham Piano Centre.

Upstairs we have large workshops where we restore and repair pianos of all types.

Who are your customers?

The short answer is ‘almost everyone’ as music attracts such a large audience. Obviously we are visited by musicians, teachers, heads of music from schools and colleges, conductors, members of choirs and orchestras, youngsters learning and, of course parents.

We strive to offer a friendly and helpful approach. Even though each member of our staff is an experienced musician we try to encourage people who are new to the world of music and avoid blinding them with science.

What inspires you?

We specialise in rebuilding older pianos and we are fortunate in having David Warr, our chief piano technician. David has vast experience and is held in the highest regard by clients whose pianos he has worked on. It is inspiring to see a ‘tired’ elderly piano arrive looking in a sorry state and three months later see it emerge from our workshops looking like new!

I am also inspired by the amazing musical talent in the Cotswolds especially among young musicians. Many schools and colleges have large and successful music departments and we also have many fine teachers who are totally committed to their work.

Last but not least I try to inspire older people to take up playing a musical instrument in their retirement. It’s a wonderfully fulfilling hobby that can be enjoyed every day of the year regardless of the weather!

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

We have just launched a new website www.cheltenhampianocentre.co.uk and have been approved by the Arts Council to offer the ‘Take it away’ scheme, enabling customers to buy musical instruments on very favourable terms.

We will continue to strive to find the best quality products at competitive prices and to go the extra mile to provide good service and helpful advice in a friendly manner.

This has been the philosophy since the shop opened in 1965 but we feel it has never been more important than in todays climate.
