Meet Chigwell’s Rachael Nsofor, who set up plsLONDON to offer affordable wigs and hair extensions

Why live in Chigwell?

It offers a nice balance for myself and my kids. We get to enjoy the rural settings around us, like Epping Forest, and when we fancy a trip out of the suburbs, we jump on the Central Line and we’re in London within the hour.

What did you do prior to plsLONDON?

I still run my own branding agency MABE, which supports growing beauty and lifestyle brands. Before this, I was the UK general manager for the Swedish beauty brand FOREO.

How did plsLONDON come about?

I love hair and owned my own hair label previously, so I always had plans to re-enter the space at some point. Also, over the last 10 years, I noticed that the price of hair had hiked up significantly. I wanted to create a brand that offered affordablity to most and one which was inclusive, offering varied hair textures, reflective of the diversity we now see across the UK. During the first lockdown back in April, myself and my two daughters became each other’s hair stylists as we were unable to visit our own hairdressers. We followed YouTube tutuorials on how to apply extensions and realised that if we could do it, then everybody could. In May of 2020, plsLONDON was born.

What makes plsLONDON stand out from the crowd?

What makes us different is our diverse range of textures, application types and, most importantly, our value for money. Blonde, thick manes can often set you back hundreds of pounds and the lace front wigs we see on Beyonce or Kim Kardashian can at times be over £1,000, which is just ridiculous! You can purchase hair from plsLONDON for as little as £15. We also encourage our customers to DIY at home, off-setting the cost of a stylist.

What’s the most enjoyable aspect of your job?

I think working alongside my two daughters, aged 25 and 17. They’re from a generation that is full of creativity and experimentation. I learn from them every day, which then gets transferred into the business.

How do you relax?

I enjoy a good night out with my girlfriends locally. We went to the Melin Chigwell launch, which was fabulous, and when we can we have a nice meal at Sheesh too.

What’s your perfect day?

Can you really have a perfect day in 2020? I think nowadays I’m just grateful that I have my health, my family and a great network of support around me. I feel very lucky and fortunate for all I have.

Who would be your dream dinner party guest?

Gemma Collins. She cracks me up. She’s so funny and full of life. She doesn’t take herself too seriously and appears to be a kind but straight-talking kind of girl.

Would you describe yourself as a good cook?

My kids think so, so does that count? They love a good Nigerian home-cooked meal, as do I.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Miniature Prosecco bottles from Co-op.

Do you have a secret celebrity crush?

There’s something about José Mourinho.

How would you describe your style?

Classic with a vintage twist. I love a good charity shop!

What’s your biggest achievement to date?

I think getting my kids involved in the business early on. I’m hoping that this gives them a good foundation to build upon.

What’s top of your bucket list?

To give back. I really hope that some day I will be in the position to set up a charity that supports young, single mothers with business ideas. I have come from this struggle and so I know how hard it can be.

Where would you like to be in five years’ time?

Hopefully, if my children are settled, somewhere hot and full of nature.
