Review: Not Now Darling
Clare Bourke reviews the comedy Not Now Darling at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage

It has been a very long time since I left a theatre with my face actually aching from laughing so much! And what a delight it was to have this experience again last night after watching the side-splitting farce Not Now Darling at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage.
This classic, multi award-winning farce by Ray Cooney and John Chapman stars the ever popular and always entertaining funnyman Damian Williams in the lead role and is two hours of good old-fashioned misunderstandings, mistaken identities, double-entendres and banging doors.

Not Now Darling centres on the philandering Gilbert who wants to give girlfriend Janie a fur coat which she can wear without her husband becoming suspicious.
However, as Gilbert's plan misfires and more couples become embroiled, the plot develops into a hilarious romp.
Star of the show was undoubtedly Damian Williams and it is fair to say that at times it felt more like a one-man show. But Damian deserved the limelight as he provided a laugh a minute through not just the script but also his impromptu chats with the audience, attempts to fix shaky scenery and props, and for causing other cast members to laugh so much they could hardly get their own lines out.
The play is currently on tour so you would expect a polished performance. Not so here – and yet somehow that worked all the better for them. Several lines had to redelivered and the script was definitely veered away from more than once but that simply added to the absolute hilarity on stage and had the audience doubled up with laughter.
Philip Meeks started off as the straight man to Damian’s funny but gave a tremendously amusing performance as Gilbert’s business partner while actresses Grace Alexander-Scott, Holly Easterbrook and Jessica Day had the timing to a tee as they raced on and off set, on occasion wearing very little.
This is a definitely a comedy not to be missed – there’s still time to book your tickets for tonight!
